Musher Laura Neese and Maple, her retired Lead Dog

We visited MI Dog, a summer sled dog center run by an Iditarod Musher named Laura Neese located a few miles north of Newberry, MI.  The tour takes about an hour and a half and starts with cuddling some of her puppies which helps socialize them and lowers your blood pressure no matter how stressed you are!  Great therapy!

Laura then talks about her experiences during her 4 1000 mile races - 2 Iditarod and 2 Yukon Challenge races.  After that you get to meet some of her teammates and clearly her passion – the dogs!  We learned a lot about her racing dogs, what it takes to compete, the various legs of the races and the challenges along the way.

Finally, you get to see the rest of the racing dogs in their kennels.  Some of her dogs have gone over 25,000 miles with her between all the various races they've run together! These dogs love to run and she said slowing them down during a long race is the hardest part.  It was an amazing experience! If you are ever in the UP, you should definitely stop by and hear about her experiences!
