Tahquamenon Falls, MI
Have you ever seen Root Beer colored falls before?? You can here! Tahquamenon Falls State Park boasts two Root Beer colored falls - The Upper falls and the Lower falls about 3-4 miles apart. The water gets its dark tinge from tannin leaching in from the surrounding forest. These are some of the most well known falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
The Upper Tahquamenon Falls is a single fall dropping about 50 feet before continuing its journey to the lower falls. There are park entrances near both falls and a trail connecting them. Both sections have a parking area, restrooms, a store with food and memorabilia, paved and boardwalk trails to various overlooks where you can get a good view and photos. You only need to pay once at either entrance to visit both sections.
Upper Tahquamenon Falls
The Lower Tahquamenon Falls are split apart by an island into two sides and each of those are stairstep falls of much shorter drops. People were actually in the water near the lower falls but you can't get anywhere near the upper falls that way due to dangerous currents and other conditions. There are also boats for rent to explore the area around the lower falls.
Lower Tahquamenon Falls
The state park is very well kept, clean and pleasant to hike! If you are up in the Upper Peninsula you should consider stopping to check out these natural wonders!
