The Great Salt Lake, UT

While enroute to Grand Teton National Park from Bryce and Zion National Parks, we took a travel break in the Salt Lake City area. We went to see some of the Salt Lake City area including the Great Salt Lake. It was about a 40 minute drive back to the south and then west to get to the Salt Lake State Park where we figured we should get a good look at the lake. The park was very small but did have a marina and had boat tours available. The water seemed very low but they said it was back to normal after a few years of being low. The lake is the second saltiest body of water in the world behind only the Dead Sea. Nothing lives in it but tiny Brine Shrimp, Brine Flies and some bacteria. Looking at it, you can’t really tell that it’s so salty except in some places where the water has dried up and left salt behind. A times during the year it is an important stop for migrating water fowl who gorge themselves on the tiny shrimp before moving on. Overall, I am glad we stopped to see it but I don’t think we saw the most interesting portions. Apparently, up north, the lake is pink from a kind of bacteria that lives there.
We have logged 5 out of 10 planned national parks so far on this trip plus several national monuments and a Navajo Nation National Monument! Check out our website for more information on our travels: www.BraysAway.com
